Mike Goethals of Geneseo won the opening week's $100, going 14-1 with a tie-breaker of 41. The problem is, that was the same record and tie-breaker turned in by Kyle Matlick of Reynolds. In the case of a tie, the computer selects the $100 winner. Good news for Mike; bad news for Kyle.
There were nine who were 13-2. One of those -- Gregg Schroeder -- hails from Cherry Valley, Ill. The others were Michael Ryan, Tom Watsson, Matt Griffin and Nick Miller of Moline; Tony Rockwell of Silvis; Sharon Horvath of East Moline; Peggy Allen of Bettendorf; and Doug Herrmann of LeClaire.
Yes, the pig won
It's time to eat a little crow -- no, make that bacon. The KUUL-FM Morning Guys -- Steve Ketelaar and Mark Manuel -- used a prognosticating pig to make their picks as Guest Guessers last week. Pigpen went 11-4. The Ness Guess went 10-5. Lindquist Ford's football expert, Jim Humphrey, went 9-6.
So, as far as the Ness Guess is concerned, the record is 1-0 vs. humans.
Ketelaar and Manuel suggested the Ness Guess might get a parrot predictor, given Ness' ties to the Quad City Parrot Heads. Maybe Captain Morgan could weigh in as well. Then again, the Captain likely would side with the Buccaneers, and the parrot would flock to the Cardinals and Jets (mechanical birds). The Ness Guess picked against all three of those this week.
The pig's picks, by the way, can be found at kuul.com. The porker threw in a couple of bonuses, that the losing coach from the Notre Dame-Michigan game will get fired (he didn't oink when, though) and that Bettendorf would beat Assumption. The Ness Guess' wife is an Assumption graduate, so there's even more reason to despise that pig.
Bring on Zach
Team Lindquist is bringing out another heavy hitter -- Zach Johnson. No, it's not the No. 10 ranked golfer in the world who hails from Cedar Rapids. It's the one who is the Salesman of the Week for the Bettendorf dealership. We'll find out this week if this Zach Johnson is a football expert or one who would be better off trying his hand at the links.
