By Default keyword searches are 'AND' searches, which means that each word or group of words submitted must all be present in all of the files that it finds.
George Bush will return all the stories that have 'George' and 'Bush', although the string "George Bush" may never appear in the story.
EXACT PHRASES
Place double quote marks (") around any phrase of words to find exact phrases.
"George Bush" will query only for stories with the string 'George Bush' in them.
"George Bush","John Kerry" will query only for stories with the string 'George Bush' AND the string 'John Kerry' in them.
NEGATE WORDS/PHRASES
To negate a word or phrase from search results, place a dash (-) at the beginning of the word or phrase. The results will query only for stories that contain the query word(s) but NOT the negated word.
"George Bush" -"John Kerry" will query for all stories with the string 'George Bush' that do NOT contain the phrase 'John Kerry'.

DATE OPTIONS
Month/Year Selection - Returns stories that were posted within any combination of the available Months and Years provided in the drop down menus.
Date Range - Returns stories specified within the given date ranges. Leaving the 'From' box blank, and setting 'To' to "1/1/2005" will return all stories that fulfil a submitted keyword search that were posted on or before Jan 1st. 2005. Visa-versa for leaving the 'To' field empty.
Past Range - Returns all stories that fulfil your keyword search that were posted within the selected range. Selecting 'past 3 months' will only return stories from the past 3 months that fulfil a submitted keyword search.
The Exact Phrase Search for "Osama Bin Laden" without a date option specified is much slower than "Osama Bin Laden" for 2001 because the query only has to be concerned with the stories that occurred in 2001.
Quality over Quantity! Searches that return thousands of results will not be nearly as useful as a search that returns
less than one hundred results. Include as many search words and phrases as possible to "trim off"
unwanted stories. This will speed up your research as well as your searches.
'Moline' will return well over 50,000 stories. It would take weeks to sift through all of those results for the desired story or stories.
"Moline City Council" will greatly reduce the quantity of results, but the quality will be much higher than the search for 'Moline'.
